Description
27 Castle Street is a late 18th century house that has been used as a social club since the 1960s, later becoming a public house and then apartments around 2015.
The building is constructed of red brick and render, topped with a clay tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan, featuring two lower extensions at the rear and a later addition.
The main façade, facing north onto Castle Street, is primarily brick in Flemish bond and consists of three storeys and five bays. The ground floor is rendered above a plinth, with the entrance located on the right side. This entrance features a 20th-century six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight, set within a moulded doorcase. The ground floor windows are late 20th-century timber sashes with six-over-six panes, topped by a 20th-century fascia board. The upper floors have horned sashes with six-over-six panes, which are set beneath gauged brick arches. A painted sign reading "The OLD READING BREWERY" divides the upper windows. To the right, there is a hanging sign that says "BREWERY TAP," and large rainwater heads are located on either side of the elevation. The façade is finished with a brick dentil cornice and parapet, while the hipped roof is mostly concealed.
The later addition at the rear includes a small, shallow-pitched section with large pane glazing, along with a longer, linear section made of brown brick in English bond featuring casement windows, all under a pitched slate roof.
