Description
13 Castle Street is an 18th-century house that incorporates elements of an earlier building, possibly from the 17th century. It currently serves as offices.
The building is constructed primarily of vitrified, silver-grey brick with red-brick dressings. A timber and rendered shopfront was added in the late 20th century, and the rear elevations are rendered. The roof is covered with clay plain tiles.
The building’s layout follows a C-shape, featuring a main, north-facing range along Castle Street, a rear range extending southward along the eastern boundary of the plot, and a later extension that runs the full width of the building to the south.
The principal, north elevation is three storeys high, with three bays and a transverse pitched roof. Three small hips project northward, one to each bay. A 1970s replica historic shopfront features bow windows flanking a doorway with a six-panel door and a radiating fanlight. A pediment and cornice, supported by four pilasters with Soanian incisions, sits above the doorway. The first and second floors are finished with grey-brick headers and red-brick window surrounds connected by columns of red brick. Each floor contains three timber sash windows within timber surrounds flush with the brickwork; the first floor windows have six-over-six glazing, and the second floor windows have three-over-three glazing. A cornice has been removed above the second-floor windows, leaving a brick string course below a short, coped brick parapet, with a hopper and drain on the east side. Four S-shaped iron pattress plates are located at the height of the first-floor window heads.
The rear (south) range is three storeys high under a gabled roof and includes a pitched-roof dormer facing westwards. Timber casement windows are present at first-floor level. A single-storey, flat-roofed extension from the late 20th century spans the width of the plot.
The interior of the building has been remodelled, but a historic staircase remains, featuring turned balusters, ball finials, and pendants on the newels.
