Description

7 Castle Street is a townhouse built in the mid-18th century that was converted to office use in the early 20th century.

The building features silver grey brick laid in header bond with red brick dressings, a timber doorcase, stone steps leading to the front door, and a slate roof. The rear elevation is constructed of red brick. The plan is irregularly rectangular, with a principal north range facing Castle Street and a slightly staggered rear south range extending along the western plot boundary. The building has three storeys and a basement.

The street front has four bays and a pitched roof to the north range, which is concealed behind a plain, stone-coped brick parapet. The principal north elevation is arranged in a regular grid, with openings in four evenly-spaced bays. Narrow strips of red brick rise from a silver-grey brick plinth to the parapet, defining each bay. The main entrance is located to the right of the centre in the second bay from the west, featuring a six-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above, which has intricate timber glazing bars, all within a timber doorcase topped with a bracketed pediment. Three stone steps lead up to the door from the street. The other three ground-floor bays each contain a six-over-six timber sash window under a flat-arched window head in gauged brickwork. Beneath the westernmost ground-floor window is a mostly bricked-up basement light with a segmental-arched head. The first and second floors each have four six-over-six timber sash windows under gauged brickwork heads, similar to those on the ground floor but slightly shorter.

The rear south range is mostly hidden from the street but appears to be made of red brick, featuring ranges of timber sash windows on each floor of the south elevation.
