Description

These are a pair of early 19th century houses, later converted into a shop on the ground floor, and subsequently into offices and apartments during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The houses are constructed of red-brown brick with a slate roof. They are entered from the former entrance to number 3, the entrance to number 5 having been removed.

The north-facing front elevation, facing Castle Street, is three storeys high and features a combination of Flemish and header brick bonds. It is divided into three bays, with a door to the left, a central three-storey bow, and a shallower three-storey bow to the right. The ground floor brickwork was inserted in the later 20th century, replacing earlier shopfronts. The entrance is accessed by three stone steps with modern steel railings. The four-panel door is within a round-headed frame with a fanlight above, and a round-headed, gauged-brick arch. Each floor of the bows has a timber, tripartite sash window, set under a wide, flat arch of gauged brickwork. A sinuous stucco cornice and parapet runs along the top of the front elevation.

The rear, south-facing elevation is of red brick with a regular pattern of timber sash windows on each floor. A two-storey extension with a mono-pitch roof was added in the 20th century to the east side.
