Description

Nos. 6, 8, and 10 on St George's Way in Portsmouth are a former brewery warehouse that later became a blacksmith's shop and is now used as a steel fabrication workshop. This building dates from the early 19th century and features grey brick headers with red brick quoins and dressings.

The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays arranged in a pattern of 2/2/2/3/2. On the right side of the central projecting part and on the left side of the recessed section, there is a two-leaf boarded door with a five-pane overlight to the right, both set under a gauged brick segmental arch. To the left of the central entrance is a blinded segmental arched recess, with two more to the left and one four-pane fixed casement at the far right, all under gauged brick segmental arches.

The doors and windows are flanked by brick pilaster strips that extend through to the first floor. A stone band runs along the first floor, and on the far left within the recessed part, there are two paired round-headed 19-pane casements with radial glazing. On either side of the projecting part, there are paired round-headed blinded recesses. At the centre, there is a round-headed hatchway with a hoist above it, and to one side is a 29-pane round-headed casement with radial glazing. Each casement, recess, and hatchway is set beneath a gauged brick round arch with a keystone, flanked by brick pilasters with stone imposts and base caps. The render and facing brickwork on the parapet of the right projecting part is missing.
