Description
The Portsea Free School, now part of the University of Portsmouth, is a school building dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a low-pitched hipped roof covered with Welsh slate. The building has three storeys and six bays, with the far right bay being narrower.
On the right side of the facade, there is a two-leaf six-panelled door with a six-pane overlight, which is set under a flat gauged brick arch. To the left of this door, there are four 24-pane two-light casements, each also set under a flat gauged brick arch. Further to the left, there are two later panelled doors with concrete lintels, which are located within infill where former flat gauged brick window openings were.
On the first floor, there is a rendered band that is interrupted at the stack, with the left side inscribed "Portsea Free School." The rendered first floor sill band is also broken at the stack, featuring five casements similar to those on the ground floor, along with a later narrow casement at the far right, set under a flat rendered lintel. The second floor contains five small two-light casements, with an additional later casement on the far right.
At the rear, there is a plain single-storey former chapel extension. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
