Description
The Goldfinch Monument is a chest tomb dating from around 1820, located approximately 5 meters west of the Vicarage of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wymering, Portsmouth. It is constructed of ashlar and features recessed fluted pilasters at each corner, which have sloping shafts, moulded caps, and bases set on a plinth. The tomb is capped with a weathered top slab.
On the long south face, there is an inscription that reads, "Sacred to the memory of John Goldfinch who departed this life - July 1819," although the remainder of the inscription is illegible. The opposite side bears the inscription, "Sacred to the memory of William Goldfinch who departed this life 9th October 1839 in the 76th year of his age." The monument has some ivy growth on it.
