Description

16 The Hard is a house that has been converted into a restaurant and flats, built around 1870. It features ashlar stone construction and a mansard slate roof with a stone stack on the left. The building has three storeys and an attic, arranged in three bays. Rusticated pilaster strips are found on either side of the central bay, along with quoins on the first and second floors. The entrance consists of a two-leaf glazed door with a fanlight above it. To the left are two round-headed windows, and to the right is one round-headed window, each with a stone panelled apron. There is also a two-leaf, four-panelled door on the right, set within a moulded stone architrave with a fanlight above a stone head.

The doors and windows are positioned beneath arcaded round rusticated arches, which feature carved fruit and leaf keystones and dividing pilasters. Each pilaster is adorned with paired long stone balcony brackets that support a first-floor balcony with an ornate scrolled iron balustrade. The first floor has two flanking tripartite sashes, each consisting of a central sash with narrow flanking sashes, all framed by moulded stone architraves with bracketed cornices and segmental pediments. The centre features one sash with a similar surround and a triangular pediment. The second floor has three sashes, each with an architrave, cambered arch, and moulded cornice on console brackets. The building is topped with a panelled parapet with coping and three round-headed dormers. The interior has not been inspected.
