Description
The Stead monument is a chest tomb located approximately 7 meters north of the chancel of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Portsmouth, dating from around 1811. It is constructed of ashlar and features recessed fluted pilasters at each corner, topped with ovolo and scotia moulded caps, and set on a plinth with a projecting base. The cornice has vertical incised dressings and a moulded, weathered top slab that is set back from the cornice, featuring a cavetto and beaded moulded base.
On the long side facing west, there is a moulded framed panel with an inscription that reads: "Sacred to the memory of Mary Rood wife of James Wood Stead who departed this life the 29th of January 1811 aged 49 years. Also five children of the above viz: James aged 9 years and Robert and Martha who died in their infancy. Mary Ann Stead died 11th April 18-- aged 54." The east side has an inscription that reads: "Sacred to the memory of James Wood Stead died 8th October 18--," although the remainder of this inscription is illegible. The stonework of the plinth is broken at the corners.
