Description

A pair of houses dated 1854, located on Villiers Road, Southsea, Portsmouth, and now with No. 8 operating as a nursing home. The houses are stuccoed with a roof of interlocking tiles and a central brick stack. They are two storeys and an attic, arranged with four bays per house in a 2:2 layout, with the central two bays projecting. Each projecting bay has a triangular gable, and the outer bays have narrow triangular gables, all featuring elaborate cut bargeboards, except for the bargeboard on the right-hand bay of No. 10, which is plain. Rusticated quoin strips are present. No. 8 is on the right and No. 10 is on the left. No. 8 features a two-leaf boarded door with a pointed fanlight, incorporating top glazing, set within a porch with a pointed arch. No. 10 has a similar porch. A timber tripartite canted bay window is present on the ground floor of both houses, with a central two-light six-pane casement flanked by three-pane casements; the bay is covered by a tented tile roof. The first floor has a two-light casement window to No. 8 over the porch, whilst No. 10 has a 20th-century casement window under a pointed arch. The interior was not inspected. The houses were originally the residence of Thomas Ellis Owen.
