Description
The Hasell-Sparkes monument is a chest tomb located approximately 3 metres north of the chancel of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wymering, Portsmouth. It dates from around 1824 and is constructed of ashlar. The tomb features recessed fluted pilasters at each corner with sloping shafts, moulded caps, and bases set on a plinth. The lid has a quadruple bead moulded edge and a weathered top slab.
On the long north face, there is a raised oval panel with an inscription that reads, "Sacred to the memory of Mrs Mary Hasell, died 2nd May 1824 aged 81 years," although the remainder of the inscription is illegible. The opposite side commemorates the Sparkes family, mentioning William Sparkes and Elizabeth Rachel Sparkes, aged 70, but the rest of the inscription is also illegible. The monument once had an iron railed enclosure, and there are random broken stones at the plinth along with some ivy and vegetation growth.
