Description
The Austen Memorial is located approximately 7 meters west of the northwest corner of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Portsmouth. This memorial consists of two gravestones and tombs that are side by side, dating from around 1843 and 1849, and were refurbished in 1992. The memorial is made of ashlar stone and features surface moulded stone tombs along with a footstone.
On the left, the gravestone commemorates Cassandra Eliza, the second daughter of Admiral Sir Francis W Austen KCB and his wife Mary, who passed away on May 6, 1849, at the age of 35. The footstone bears the inscription "C.E.A. 1849." The gravestone on the right honors Martha, the wife of Vice Admiral Sir Francis Austen K.C.B. She is remembered as beloved, esteemed, and respected by all who knew her, having lived a life of Christian benevolence and practical piety. Martha died on January 24, 1843, at the age of 72, and her footstone reads "M.A. 1843." Admiral Sir Francis W Austen was the uncle of the famous novelist Jane Austen, who lived from 1775 to 1817.
