Description
The Thorp-Hopkins monument is a chest tomb located approximately 3 meters north of the chancel of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Portsmouth. It dates from around 1790 and is constructed of ashlar stone. The tomb features a podium with a cyma moulded cap and a cavetto moulded base, which is set on a plinth. On the long side facing south, the die of the tomb has two side-by-side recessed beaded frames containing inscriptions. The left inscription reads: "Beneath this tomb are deposited the remains of Elizabeth the wife of Henry Thorp. Daughter of Willm and the above named Anne Hopkins (?) who departed this life Decm the 30th 1790 aged 37 years." The right inscription states: "Beneath this tomb are deposited the remains of Will Hopkins who departed this life May the 11th 179- in the 69th year of his age."
