Description

These almshouses, dated 1830, were endowed by Miss Beaty. They are constructed of gault brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stone dressings. The roof is slate-covered and has moulded stone coping to the gable parapets. The building features large, symmetrically placed axial stacks with chamfered triple shafts and yellow clay pots.

The plan is rectangular, with the end bays slightly projecting, and a central entrance leading to four dwellings. The architectural style is Tudor. The south front is symmetrical, with a 1:2:1 bay arrangement; the end bays are gabled and slightly advanced, each with stone kneelers. A central gabled brick porch has a chamfered, 4-centred stone arch with integral kneelers to the gable. The windows are set in chamfered openings with stone lintels and hoodmoulds, and mostly have renewed 2-light casements with arched upper lights. A large stone tablet above the porch is inscribed 'Independant Chapel Almshouses, erected and endowed by Miss Beaty in A.D.1830'. The east and west ends are gabled. The rear elevation is similar to the front, but with some blocked windows and doorways. The interior has not been inspected.
