Description

The Old Rectory is a house, now part of The Open University. It dates back to the 17th century, with later additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The exterior is predominantly colourwashed brick, partially concealing timber framing. The roof is covered with old tiles, and there are brick chimneys. The house is two storeys and an attic, arranged in an L shape. The southwestern corner features a timber-framed section with vertical studs and red brick infilling, with the west end roughly plastered. The windows are largely irregular 18th-century sash windows. The south front includes a late 18th-century addition in the centre and a 19th-century projecting wing on the right. The north front has 19th-century additions on either side, with a two-storey gabled porch in the centre, and 19th-century segmental arched windows.
