Description

The Parish Church of St Peter is a historic church located in Stoke Goldington. It is primarily constructed of rubblestone and features lead roofs on the nave and aisles, with a tile roof on the chancel. The nave dates back to the early 12th century, while the clerestory windows were added in the 16th century. The south aisle was built around 1240, and the north aisle followed shortly after in 1250. The chancel was rebuilt and a south chapel was added around 1330, along with a south porch. The north aisle was reconstructed around 1400, and the west tower was built in the mid-15th century. In the 16th century, the north aisle was shortened. The chancel arch and the north door are both Norman in style. The nave arcade, featuring three bays, is designed in the Early English style. The tower consists of two stages and has a battlemented parapet. A tub front from the 12th century sits on a moulded base. Inside, there is an early 18th-century pulpit and the royal arms of William IV. A wall monument commemorates Thomas Hodgkins, who died in 1720, along with his wife and daughter; it features an inscription panel with a narrow sienna marble surround, a moulded base, and a cherub urn, topped by a cornice and broken pediment with a central urn. The east window contains stained glass created by Kempe in 1902.
