Description

A house, built late in the 14th or 15th century and remodelled in the early 17th century, now divided into two dwellings at 9 and 11 Dag Lane. The original cruck-framed structure is faced with coursed limestone rubble dating from the 17th century, topped with a gabled concrete tile roof. A stone stack, finished in 19th-century brick, is located at the left end. The building follows a two-unit plan, originally featuring an open hall to the left. It has one storey and an attic, and originally had a two-window front. The front now has timber lintels above a central 20th-century door, a blocked door to the right, and 20th-century casement windows. Dormer windows were added in the mid-20th century. The building is flanked by mid-20th-century extensions. Inside No. 9, the interior features quartered, chamfered beams with a central medallion, a detail from when the floor was inserted in the early 17th century. The former open hall retains a pair of late 14th or 15th century stop-chamfered raised crucks with run-out stops. These crucks have mortices for a butt collar and for butt purlins to the lower stage, with trenching for purlins to the upper stage. The crucks are tenoned into a yoke, which supports a ridge purl housed in the stone wall to the left. The ridge purlin also rests on a yoke and king post to the right, enclosed within a straight-principal truss with a smoke-blackened wattle and daub partition.
