Description
This is a pair of concrete roadblock plinths built in 1940 as part of the Hoo Stop Line, created in response to the threat of a German invasion during the Second World War.
The plinths are located to the east of the village of Hoo St Werburgh, on either side of a track that runs north from Stoke Road. Each plinth is a large rectangular block of reinforced concrete, approximately 1.7 meters high, 4 meters long, and 1.2 meters wide. They feature a tapering face to the south and have a deep slot that divides each plinth in two, designed to hold a horizontal steel rail, often repurposed from railway tracks, which would serve as a strong but removable barrier. The concrete was poured into shuttering made from corrugated metal sheeting, leaving a textured surface on the blocks.
