Description
The balustrade runs along the River Medway esplanade, between Rochester Bridge and Rochester Pier. It was constructed in 1914, incorporating elements salvaged from the earlier bridge designed by William Cubitt in 1856, which was removed to allow for the construction of the current road bridge. The balustrade is made of bulbous limestone balusters with a coping and plinth. A lamp sits atop a tall, fluted column on a large panelled plinth section. The balustrade ends at the pier with a pair of low, panelled piers, each featuring a fluted column but without lamps.
