Description
The Castle Club is a building located on Rochester Esplanade, originally a private house, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick that has been stuccoed on the front, with Welsh slate roofs. The south wall is made of rubble masonry, which may have been part of or built using materials from the adjacent Bridge Chapel and its associated buildings.
The building has three storeys and features a front facade with three bays, where the ground floor is rusticated. The central bay projects forward and includes a portico supported by Doric columns, with glazed double doors beneath a rectangular overlight. There is a giant order of two recessed Ionic columns. All windows are hornless sashes, except for those on the ground floor and the first floor center, which have a tripartite arrangement with glazing bars. The side bay windows on the ground floor are recessed under round-headed super-ordinate arches. The building also has external blind casings throughout, along with a parapet, cornice, and sill-bands. The rear elevation, which faces Gandulph Square, features sash windows under segmental-headed arches. The interior has not been inspected.
