Description
Chantry Cottage is a cottage built around 1830, which incorporates the end wall of a timber-framed building from the 16th century or earlier, believed to have been a dwelling for a chantry priest. The rest of this earlier building was demolished around 1900. The front elevation is constructed from Ipswich stocks in Flemish bond and features a slate roof with a wooden bracket cornice. The cottage is two storeys high and has one window, which is a 12-pane sash set in a moulded architrave. The 20th-century doorcase includes pediment pilasters, diamond-shaped paterae, and panelled reveals, leading to a six-panelled 20th-century door with a diamond pattern on the panels. The side elevation reveals a section of exposed framing from the 15th or early 16th century, showcasing midrail curved braces and jowled posts with brick infilling. There are also 20th-century extensions at the rear.
