Description
The Homestead is a house located on Princes Avenue in Walderslade, dating from the mid 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. It features a flint rubble plinth and rendered brick, with a brick gable on the right side and 20th-century lateral stacks, all topped with a tiled roof. The layout consists of a two-room plan, with a heated hall-kitchen on the right and an originally unheated service room on the left.
The house is two storeys high, with a cellar and attic, and has a two-window range. The left-of-centre doorway has a half-glazed door, while a right-hand doorway has been blocked. A brick band encircles the building, which has timber mullion windows: a two-light window on the ground floor and a three-light window on the first floor to the left, and a three-light window on the ground floor and a four-light window on the first floor to the right, both with mid 19th-century casements. The right-hand gable features an open-ended lean-to, and there is a central 17th-century rear stair light with ovolo mouldings.
Inside, the property contains stop-chamfered ground-floor lateral and axial beams, as well as a central rear winder stair leading to a 3.5 bay attic that has a queen post roof, butt purlins, and diagonal wind braces. The Homestead is a largely intact example of a mid 17th-century house, showcasing early brick use and notable 17th-century window designs.
