Description

No. 126 High Street is a shop that possibly dates from the late 17th century and has undergone considerable alterations. The building is timber-framed, although none of the original framing is visible from the outside, and it features a Kent-tile gable-end roof with a rear stack. Originally, it was a two-unit range running parallel to the street with a rear wing and has two storeys.

The front of the building is rendered and designed to mimic timber framing, with two window bays that project slightly. On the first floor, there are 12-pane horned sash windows, although one window to the right is a dummy. The shop front, which has been altered in the 19th century, features a deeply overhanging design that could conceal a jetty, with pilasters, a central double door that is half-glazed with ventilator panels above, and a tiled plinth. The right side of the building has mock timber framing with some brick cladding. The rear wing includes a 16-pane hornless sash window on the first floor and a later lean-to addition.

Inside, the ground floor has ceiling beams with simple chamfer or cyma mouldings and scroll stops. A staircase adjacent to the rear stack serves both the main range and the rear wing, with some studwork visible on the first floor.
