Description

The Gillingham War Memorial is a tall, four-sided stone pylon erected in the 20th century to commemorate those who died in conflict. It stands on a two-stepped, square base, a two-stage square pedestal, and is set within a square paved area surrounded by a chain supported by low bollards.

The pylon has stepped detailing to the top and shallow cross forms on its front and rear faces. The front face features a carved roundel at the top depicting a low relief figure of Christ crucified, holding a torch in each hand and supported by two female figures on either side. Below this roundel is the inscription “TO THE / GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THOSE / OF THIS BOROUGH / WHO LAID DOWN / THEIR LIVES FOR / KING & COUNTRY / IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1919 / AND / WORLD WAR / 1939-1945 / KOREAN WAR / 1950-1953.” The rear face has a similar roundel containing a carved laurel wreath and the inscription “1914 / 1919,” with the inscription below reading “AT THE GOING DOWN / OF THE SUN & IN THE / MORNING WE WILL / REMEMBER THEM.” A small rectangular stone vase on the base is inscribed with "THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."

Two inscribed stones erected in 2013 stand to the north side of the memorial and are not included in this listing.
