Description
Nile Cottage is a terrace of three houses built in the 18th century and remodeled in the early 19th century. The structure is made of rendered and painted brick with brick axial stacks located below the ridge, topped by a hipped slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a window arrangement of 2:2:1. The exterior features an irregular range with two roofs.
No. 80 has a right-hand doorway with an architrave and a six-panel door, with the top pair of windows being glazed. No. 79 has a left-of-centre half-glazed door with a bracketed canopy, while No. 78 features a right-hand door with a bracketed canopy and a panelled door. All houses have 6/6-pane sash windows in exposed frames, with the middle windows slightly staggered. Notably, No. 80 has a panel inscribed "Nile Cottage 1722."
Inside, No. 80 includes an entrance stair hall with a flight of stairs featuring turned balusters, panelled doors, and early 19th-century cast-iron fireplaces. It is reported that the remodeling in the early 19th century was carried out by Admiral Austen, who lived from 1774 to 1865.
