Description
The terrace at 17-39 Star Hill comprises twelve houses in six pairs, dating from the early 19th century. The houses are built in Flemish bond gault brick with slate roofs, and follow a double pile plan. The houses at numbers 17-31 have two bays, while numbers 33-39 have three, and they are stepped upwards along the hill, with each pair slightly set back from the next. Numbers 17-31 have a basement with 16-pane sashes, a ground floor with 12-pane sashes, and smaller 12-pane sashes on the first and second floors, all set within flat rubbed brick arches. Numbers 33-39 have basements with 2 bays and three bays above, all with sashes possessing glazing bars. External stone steps with Portland stone treads and cast-iron railings with spear tops lead to each front door, which is a six-panel design with four raised and fielded panels. Each door is topped with a semi-circular fanlight containing cast-iron glazing bars, framed within two concentric semi-circular arches. Some of the rubbed brick arches above the doors have been painted. A few fanlights retain the original cast-iron glazing bars, with Nos 17-23 being the only ones fully intact. Coped parapets have a lower string course, with dormers now mostly featuring replacement casements; originally, these were sashes with glazing bars, although a surviving example remains at No 17. Large stacks are positioned on each party wall division. No. 39 retains original front garden railings. The rear elevation features areas and sashes with glazing bars, some with single French doors. The interior features include reeded cornices, six-panel raised and fielded doors, stairs located off-axis and top-lit, stick balusters, turned newels, and stained handrails. It is believed that No. 25 was built in 1816 and No. 37 in 1810.
