Description
The Mortuary of St Bartholomew's Hospital is a garden building that is now part of St Bartholomew's Hospital. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and is constructed of painted stucco on brick, with slate roofs. The building has two storeys, and the lower wing has been raised to two storeys in a Gothic or 'Castle Style'.
The centre features a ground floor door with a four-centered arch, which is set under a drip mould head and is accessed by stairs with a balustrade. The first floor has three plate glass sash windows that were inserted around 1900. At the corners of the building, there are two rounded towers that include arrow slit openings on both the ground and first floors. A drip-mould string runs across the towers at the first floor level, with a similar string at the parapet level that features battlements.
To the east, there is a recessed wing with three Gothic-headed openings on the ground floor, and the second floor has a hipped slate roof. The west wing includes a flat-roofed addition that was added around 1960. At the rear, there are small angle buttresses with ogees at the heads. This building serves as an eye-catching feature for No 257 High Street to the north.
