Description

Nos 343 and 345 on High Street are a pair of houses with original shop fronts, dating from the early 19th century. They are constructed of painted brick and topped with a slate roof, standing three storeys tall with two bays each.

No 343 features a ground floor shop front with four slightly canted plate glass windows that have muntin divisions and arched heads. It includes two fluted pilasters at the door and at the angle, along with a canted frieze and a projecting cornice. No 345 retains only two outer muntin divisions of its original shop windows, but the canted frieze and cornice are still present. The doorway is located at the angle, and the first floor has 12-pane sashes set in reveals. The second floor of No 343 has sashes with some missing glazing bars, while No 345 has had its sashes completely removed as of February 1989.

Both houses feature a cornice band and a parapet with stone coping. The deep return facades include side access doors to the houses above the shops. Fluted pilasters and reveals are preserved at No 345, which also has distinctive 16-pane sashes running through the storeys above. A staircase remains in situ.
