Description
The retaining walls, piers, railings, and steps between Nos 368 and 374, and opposite No 351 on Rochester High Street date from around 1800. These features likely define the street side of the garden that once belonged to No 315 High Street. The structure consists of two gault brick walls built in Flemish bond with stone dressings. The cast-iron railings feature Gothick tracery panels and spear-headed dividers above. There are two 2-centred arched recesses in the walls at the east and west ends, which were formerly closed and possibly used for lamps. Central stone steps lead up into the garden, flanked by two angle piers at the east and west, each topped with stone caps. This structure is included for its group value with No 351 High Street and the castellated garden building that is now part of St Bartholomew's Hospital.
