Description

This is a terrace of six houses located on New Road, Rochester. The terrace was built in the early 19th century, with number 18 constructed slightly earlier as a single dwelling. The houses are built using a mix of Flemish bond brick and gault brick, with Welsh slate roofs that are hipped to each property. The houses have a double-depth plan and three storeys, with basements. Each house features a ground floor round-arched window, and an upper arched sash window. The first and second floors each have two 12-pane sashes with glazing bars, all set within flat, rubbed brick arches. The ground floor window and door openings are framed by two concentric rubbed brick arches. Original single-panel doors remain, each with an arched plate glass fanlight above. Number 18 has six-pane sashes on the second floor, while number 19 has marginal light glazing bar patterns. Number 18 has a cement render finish, number 19 has unsympathetic re-pointing, and numbers 20-23 retain original pointing. Number 28 has a late 20th-century replacement door. Plat bands are present at the cills of the windows on number 18. Numbers 19-23 have a string course at the springing of the ground floor arches, at sill levels, and at the base of the coped parapet. A garden party wall, with terminating coped piers, area and front railings remains; these consist of either 'x' frame designs with rosettes at the centre or acanthus topped rails with spear-headed divisions. Number 18 has earlier flat spear-topped and urn-topped front railings. The rear facades have sash windows.
