Description

116 High Street is a townhouse with a shop, dating from the early 19th century, although the shopfront has been replaced with an early 21st-century design.

The upper floors are faced with Flemish-bond red bricks, while the first and second floors of the front (south) elevation are also made of red bricks. The east side elevation is constructed of brick that has been nearly painted. The half-hipped roof over the front range is covered in slate and features brick chimney stacks.

The building has a rectangular plan with a narrow front elevation facing south onto the High Street. The front elevation is three storeys high and one bay wide. The ground floor features an early-21st-century timber-frame shopfront with a large fascia. Above this, there is a first-floor tripartite window with single panes divided by plain strips. Curving brackets on either side of the central pane support a projecting cornice that forms the underside of the second-floor oriel window. This canted oriel window contains three one-over-one sash windows, with the two side sashes being narrower than the central one. There are plain strips between the sashes and a panelled apron below. The cornice of the oriel window extends to form a wood eaves cornice at the top of the elevation. The front range has a gable end roof covered in slates, with a brick chimney stack on its eastern side.

The east side elevation overlooks a narrow passageway and is blank on the three-storey range. Further south, there is a two-storey wing with four first-floor windows, one of which is a nine-by-nine sliding sash, while the other three are modern. At ground-floor level, there are three blocked-up openings and a fire door located at the north end of the elevation. The west and rear elevations are adjacent to adjoining buildings.
