Description
The Country Club, formerly known as the Old Literary Institute, is a building designed by John Nash in 1811. It is located at No 18A on St James's Street in the Isle of Wight. The structure is two storeys high and faced in ashlar stone. It features five windows, with the central three separated by Tuscan pilasters, a frieze, and a three-bay pediment above. There is a blind attic with coping on the sides and block string courses between the storeys.
The windows are recessed sash types with glazing bars, block sills, and flat arches that include keystones. The ground floor has a rusticated arcade with five openings; the central three are slightly projecting and have segmental arches, while the outer two are round-headed, all featuring keystones. To the south, there is a three-storey extension made of rough dressed ashlar, with a gable end slate roof. This extension has two recessed sash windows with glazing bars and block sills, with the ground floor window being wider and all having stone lintels. The entrance features a recessed door with six fielded panels, two of which are glazed, and a stone lintel above.
