Description
Monksilver is a slightly Gothicised villa built around 1840-1850, situated on St Boniface Road. The building is three storeys high with a basement and is constructed from rendered rubble. It features flanking gabled breaks that rise to three storeys, with a two-storey and attic centre. The deep eaves of the gables are topped with finials, and the roof is covered with slate.
The villa has grouped octagonal rendered chimneys alongside diagonally set brick chimneys. Each gabled break has one window, with casements set in rusticated surrounds. The first-floor windows consist of two 4-centred arched lights with marginal glazing. The ground floor includes canted bays that also feature similar marginal glazing. Altered balconies over the canted bays are supported by octagonal wooden columns.
The recessed centre of the villa has two gabled dormers and three first-floor windows, with the central window being broader and blind, while the outer windows are marginal glazed sashes. Flanking the central 4-centred arch doorway, which has a drip mould, are two small panels with drip moulds.
Monksilver is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 3 (consecutive), Veryan and Norvic, as well as Swiss Cottage and Cressingham, with the latter two being of local interest only.
