Description

The water hydrant opposite Ivy Cottage in Nettlecombe is a free-standing structure dating from 1887. It is one of eight remaining hydrants in the areas of Whitwell and Nettlecombe. Made of cast iron, the hydrant is painted red and situated in the hedge, facing north onto the lane. It stands approximately 1 meter high and features a fluted column that rests on a moulded and pierced base, which also served as a support for a water bucket. At the top, the column is capped with a domed and fluted cap adorned with an acorn finial. Below the cap, there is a lion's-head mask with a water dispenser and an operating knob located to the side.
