Description

Old Church House Cottages are a pair of cottages, with Nos. 2 and 3 under the same ownership, that were formerly a church hall and parish brewhouse. They date from the late 16th century and were in existence by 1574. The cottages are constructed from Isle of Wight stone rubble, rendered, and feature a slate roof, which was previously thatched, along with three brick chimney stacks. The right side gable end has kneelers and mullioned surrounds with hood moulding. There are five 19th-century casement windows and three plain later doors. The first cottage, No. 1, was once a brewhouse for church ales. Inside, it has square framing and a massive chamfered beam with lambs tongue stops. The first floor includes a plank door with a carving of a three-masted ship from the Napoleonic period. No. 2 used to be the parish bakehouse and features a cambered brick arch leading to an inglenook and an arch for the bread oven. No. 3 has a stone fireplace with a four-centred arch and a chamfered beam. Historical records indicate a house on this site existed in 1370, and it served as a church house for meetings and brewing ale.
