Description
The water hydrant opposite The Old Post Office is a Grade II listed structure from 1887. It is made of cast iron and stands about 3 feet high. The hydrant features a fluted column on a moulded base, topped with a domed fluted cap and an acorn finial, with a lion's head mask below. There is a knob on the left-hand side. Adjacent to the hydrant, a metal plaque in the churchyard wall states, "This standard was part of a water supply for Whitwell installed in 1887, half the cost subscribed by Mr W Spindler of Old Park, the remainder being supplied by the people of the village. The water was supplied by Mr Granville Ward from a spring on the land at Bierley."
