Description
Mount Cleves is an office for a caravan park that was originally a house built in the 18th century and altered and refronted in 1829. The building is finished in stucco and features a hipped slate roof with stuccoed chimneystacks. It consists of two parallel ranges, is two storeys high, and has three windows across the front. The wide eaves cornice adds to its architectural detail.
The east front is notable for its giant Ionic pilasters, with most first-floor windows featuring six glazing bars, while the ground floor windows do not have any glazing bars. A Tuscan portico enhances the entrance. The south front has four windows, including two projecting hipped end bays with giant Ionic pilasters. The first floor has four sashes with six glazing bars, while the ground floor windows lack glazing bars. The recessed centre includes wooden shutters and is flanked by a colonnade of square columns leading to French windows. A plinth supports the structure.
To the left side, there is a one-storey conservatory link from the mid-19th century, which is also stuccoed and features a ramped parapet adorned with three elaborate urns. This section includes two eight-pane sashes and double doors with a rectangular fanlight above. Inside, there is an early lead water cistern for a water closet dating from around 1820. Historically, in 1802, a lead merchant who owned the Mortimer Foundry in Newport lived here.
