Description
Great East Standen is a house built in the early 18th century, with mid-19th century extensions added to the rear. It is constructed of brick in black header bond, featuring red brick dressings, and has a slate roof with brick chimneystacks. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with five windows. Notable architectural features include a moulded eaves band, a plinth, and one modern gabled dormer. The façade has five 12-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves.
There is a mid-19th century porch at the centre, made of brick with a hipped slate roof, leading to a panelled door that is approached by six stone steps supported by brick ramps. The left side of the house features two oval-shaped oculi, a cambered door, and one central brick chimneystack, along with a 19th-century stack and a large external brick chimneystack. This external stack has a brick inscribed with 'W.S. 1768' on the right side.
At the rear, there is a two-storey painted brick extension with a sun fire plaque and a lookout window near the top of the external chimneystack. Internally, it is said that the left side of this chimneystack contains a small chamber, possibly used for hiding smuggled goods. Historically, this site belonged to Princess Cicely, the youngest daughter of Edward IV, during her second marriage to Richard Keynes of Niton, and later to Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, who became Captain of the Isle of Wight in 1603.
