Description
The Arreton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, designed by Percy Goddard Stone. It was altered after the Second World War.
Constructed from Ventnor rag stone, the memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St George, which is a Grade I listed building, next to the path leading to the south porch.
The memorial features a tall, elegant, floriated Latin cross with concave angles, set on a tapered plinth and a two-stepped octagonal base. In the center of the cross is a shield inscribed with "PRO PATRIA" above a rose. The base includes recessed panels, with the front inscribed with "IN MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN OF ARRETON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918," along with names on the sides and back. The front of the top step is inscribed with "AND THOSE WHO FELL/ 1939-45," with names listed on either side.
