Description
The Church of St John is a Grade II listed church built between 1880 and 1881 by architect C L Luck in the Early English style. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features modern pantiled roofs. The church consists of a nave and chancel combined, with four bays in the nave and one bay in the chancel. It has north and south aisles, and an octagonal spirelet covered in shingles sits on the roof between the nave and chancel.
The west front is notable for its tall lancet windows and tall buttresses. The clerestorey has five double trefoliated windows, which are separated by stepped buttresses. The aisles are adorned with traceried windows, featuring triple lancets in arched surrounds, with the central lancet being taller and decorated with quatrefoil motifs. The south front is gabled and has a cross-shaped saddlestone. An arched doorcase with engaged columns provides the entrance.
Inside, the church is spacious, with large arches supported by circular columns. It contains an octagonal font decorated with trefoil motifs and an elaborate octagonal stone lectern from 1903, which features a carved figure of a saint and marble columns. The east wall is arcaded with six large trefoliated stained glass windows, and there is a wooden louvred reredos. Additionally, the church has sedilia and a screen leading to the side chapels. The wooden roof is of the hammerbeam type, featuring a crenellated tie beam.
