Description
Christchurch is a church built in 1845 by Woodman of Reading in the Early English style, with later additions by Woodman in 1861 and by S E Tomkins in 1874, who added the north aisle. The church is constructed of coursed Isle of Wight stone and features a tiled roof. It is oriented north to south and includes a nave and chancel combined, along with north and south aisles and a north-west tower that has an integral porch. The south-west tower has two stages and is topped with a stone steeple.
The church features a pointed arched doorcase supported by carved human mask corbels and includes one trefoliated lancet. The upper stage of the tower has a clock face and bell openings, with double lancets and quatrefoils above. The nave is supported by stepped buttresses and has five double trefoliated-headed windows with a quatrefoil motif above. The west door, which is used for rituals, has a circular rose window above it and a pointed arched doorcase with granite columns dated 1878. There is also a transeptual chapel and vestry, and the east window, also for rituals, features geometrical tracery.
Inside, the church has a three-bay nave with circular columns in the north aisle and octagonal columns in the south aisle. The chancel has two bays, and the arcades are adorned with naturalistic stiff leaf capitals. The roof is of the arched braced type with through purlins. An octagonal stone font is present, along with some stencilled decoration, including on the organ pipes. The Princess Royal Chapel, located to the right of the altar, features a stained glass window donated by the Crown Princess of Germany in 1874, Princess Victoria.
