Description

147 High Street in Newport is a late 18th century or early 19th century house that has been converted into offices.

The main south-facing front is made of chequered brick, featuring a Flemish bond of red brick with grey vitrified headers. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, and there are brick chimney stacks. The building has a rectangular shape with narrow extensions at the rear on both the west and east sides.

The front elevation stands three storeys tall and consists of five bays. There are stucco bands between the storeys, with six pattress plates installed beneath the lower band. The two outer bays project slightly forward. The window openings are topped with flat red-brick arches. The ground and first floors have replacement horned single-pane sash windows, while the second-floor windows may still have their original three-over-six sash frames. The central entrance is framed by a doorcase with Tuscan half-columns, topped with a frieze and cornice that bears the name ‘St Thomas’s Chambers’. The entrance features a six-panelled door beneath an ornamental fanlight, all set within an arched recess with panelled reveals. Additionally, there is a timber eaves board. The east side of the building is rendered up to the second floor and partially covered with slate above.
