Description

The Cottage at Wootton Manor is a farmhouse that includes an attached dairy, brewhouse, apple room, and cottage. It dates from the early 18th century and was altered and extended to the south around 1840. The building is constructed from Isle of Wight stone rubble and has a slate roof.

The northern part of the structure is long and two stories high, comprising the dairy, brewhouse, apple room, and a separate cottage. At the southern end, the farmhouse is at a higher elevation. The south front of the farmhouse features three windows, including a three-light splayed bay window that spans both floors, all with stone surrounds and a keystone. The other windows have keyed surrounds. There is a porch with a two-centred arch at the corner and a four-panelled door, with the top two panels being glazed.

On the east or garden front, there is a two-story three-light splayed bay window, with the ground floor made of ashlar. The ground floor also has 19th-century casements with hood moulding and French windows. The outline of a former tinted verandah is still visible. The rest of the east elevation, which includes the dairy, brewhouse, and apple room, has seven early 18th-century window surrounds with stone architraves and keystones, along with 19th-century casements.

The west elevation shows the farmhouse projecting to the south end with three windows and an obtusely pointed doorcase. The cottage projects to the north side and has two casements with keyed surrounds, along with a left-side doorcase featuring a keystone and a plank door.

Inside the farmhouse, there is a staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail from the early 19th century, a marble fireplace on the ground floor, and a wooden fireplace with an iron firegrate on the first floor. The first-floor fireplace features early 19th-century decorations with shell, floral, grape, sweetcorn, and anthemion motifs. The service end of the house has an 18th-century wooden winder staircase.

Wootton Manor is one of the Domesday Manors, and a building is shown on the site in a pre-1756 map of the farmstead, which indicates that there were 19 people living there at that time.
