Description

This building, originally the Office of the Brewery and formerly the Manor House of Newport, dates from the early 19th century, with substantial alterations and additions since that time. Adjoining the main block to the east is a contemporary malthouse, resembling similar structures in Sea Street and the High Street at West Cowes.

The malthouse is a three-storey structure of grey headers with red brick dressings, topped with a gable-ended tiled roof. It features nine window bays arranged within a blind arcade defined by grey header piers, stone imposts, and round-headed red brick arches. The central arch is wider, incorporating a keystone. The four eastern bays have two storeys of windows with ornamental cast iron grilles; rectangular on the ground floor and semi-circular on the first floor. The remaining bays retain the first-floor grille but have later sash windows on the ground floor. Above the arches, on the second floor, are later segment-headed windows, with a loft door positioned over the central arch.

To the east of the malthouse stands a slightly later two-storey block constructed of gault brick, with a hidden roof behind a parapet and moulded rendered cornice. This section is articulated by three recessed round-headed bays containing two storeys of windows, separated by a block stone string course. The ground-floor windows feature grilles similar to those on the adjoining malthouse, while the first-floor windows have recessed, multi-pane glazing bars, except for the central bay, which has a large double loft door.

Further east is an entrance to a yard. Facing the street at the yard’s northern end is a store, followed by an office building, both contemporary with the last three bays on the street. This office building is two storeys high, with gault brick construction, a parapet, moulded cornice and frieze, a rendered ground-floor cornice and frieze. Brick pilasters with rendered Doric capitals decorate both the ground and first floors. It has three recessed sash windows with glazing bars, block sills, and flat brick arches. A central recessed double door features two fielded panels, a blind semi-circular fanlight, and a brick arch above.

A late 19th-century store, four storeys in yellow brick, is situated to the east of the office. This store has a full-width red brick pediment containing a bull's eye within a red brick surround and keystones, as well as red brick string courses at each floor. It has four windows with loft doors in the centre, except on the ground floor, where the westernmost windows are cut off by an upper wing. The third and ground-floor windows are round-headed with red brick arches, while the first and second-floor windows have segmental red brick arches. The ground floor has a wide door with a red brick rusticated surround and an elliptical arch with keystones.
