Description

The Temple is an ornamental garden building, dating from around 1790, though it may be built on the foundations of an earlier structure from the Swainston estate. It is designed in the style of a Doric temple, featuring a very deep plinth made of stone rubble and three steps leading up to the entrance. The front is adorned with six ashlar Greek Doric columns that support an entablature with a pediment and a triglyph frieze. The entrance is plain and set within the plinth. The side walls are constructed of coursed stone rubble. At the time of the survey, part of a side wall and the rear wall were missing. The cellar contains a blocked round-headed arch, likely remnants of the previous estate building.
