Description
Champion Farmhouse is a house that likely originated in the 17th century, with a rear wing that was refronted in the 19th century. The front elevation is dated 1728 and is constructed of red brick in English bond, topped with a hipped tiled roof. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring five windows, including three modern dormers and five early 19th-century 24-pane sash windows. There is a black band between the floors in header bond, and the central doorcase has been modified to include a modern French window.
The older L-shaped range of the house is of a lower elevation, rendered with a slate roof and a central brick chimneystack. It has two storeys and three mainly modern casement windows, two of which are set in an older surround. There is a 19th-century penticed porch.
Inside, the house features a 16th-century roll moulded beam (not in its original position) and a late 17th-century chamfered spine beam with 1 1/2 inch chamfers and lambs tongue stops. There is a stone inglenook staircase, a four-panel plank door, and early 18th-century two-panelled doors. The front part of the house includes a late 18th-century pine Chinese Chippendale staircase and six-panelled doors.
