Description
Madeira Hall Hotel is an early 19th-century marine residence located in Bonchurch, dating from around 1800 to 1820. It may have been enlarged from an older cottage. The building features Gothic elements and is constructed of roughly dressed stone over two storeys. It has a half H plan, with shallow gabled wings that have large kneelers.
The right wing includes a two-storey shallow canted stone bay with a crenellated parapet, featuring two lights at the front and one on each side, with marginal glazing intersecting to form 4-centred heads of sashes and a panelled apron on the first floor. The left wing has three-light stone mullioned windows on both floors, each with drip moulds.
The central section has a coved string and parapet, along with a two-storey canted stone mullioned bay window with a coved cornice to the left. There is a small central ground floor casement window with a drip mould, and a glazing bar sash window with a drip mould above a doorway on the right. This doorway features a three-centred arch with panelled spandrels and a crenellated cornice on top.
The east elevation showcases a wooden rectangular bay window on the first floor with glazing bar sash lights, along with two additional glazing bar sashes that also have drip moulds. In the 19th century, the house was inhabited by a Miss Dick, who is believed to have inspired the character Miss Havisham in Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations." The historian Macaulay resided here in 1848. Madeira Hall is a picturesque building set in spacious grounds and is currently used as a hotel.
