Description
The Church of St James is a parish church with origins dating back to the 13th century. The porch is believed to have been added in 1766, and the vestry was constructed in 1872 during extensive remodeling by R. J. Jones. The church is built from coursed stone rubble sourced from the Isle of Wight and features a tiled roof.
The nave and chancel are combined, with a bellcote located on the west gable, a south porch, and a southeast vestry. On the north side, there are four lancet windows, a blocked four-centred arched door, and a buttress. The west end includes corner buttresses and two central buttresses, along with two 19th-century trefoliated lancets. A 19th-century stone bellcote is topped with a weathervane.
The south side features three 19th-century lancets, one 13th-century lancet window in the chancel, and a 13th-century arched doorcase with a dripmould. The door is a 19th-century plank door with elaborate iron hinges. The east front has a 19th-century paired lancet window with a dripmould, above which is a 13th-century corbel head decorated with stiff leaf motifs.
The south porch, attributed to 1766 but appearing to be from 1872, has a gable with coping, a cross-shaped saddlestone, and kneelers, along with buttresses and an arched doorcase featuring hood moulding. The vestry from 1872 has a gable that incorporates a chimneystack and a double cinquefoil-headed window with a dripmould. The church was originally the private chapel of the De Kingston family of Kingston Manor.
