Description

Embassy Court is a block of private flats constructed between 1934 and 1936, designed by Wells Coates. The building is of concrete construction, finished with plaster, and features a flat concrete roof. It is a twelve-storey L-shaped block with a curved corner facing King's Road and Western Street. The prominent feature is the series of balconies that extend along the length of Western Street and almost the full length of King’s Road, forming strong horizontal bands on the first to eighth floors.

The flats have almost continuous metal-framed, rectilinear glazing. The design incorporates projecting bays, flush with the parapet, that then recede to create a balcony; except for the two flats at the end of Western Street, where the projecting parts were designed as ‘sun-rooms’ and marketed as ‘sun-admitting Vita-Glass Sun Parlours.’ The outer windows of certain bays (the corner bay and the first three along Western Street) are slightly canted back from the parapet. The ninth, tenth, and eleventh floors are progressively set back and lack window bays. The eleventh floor is further recessed under a deep canopy.

A principal entrance is situated on King's Road, featuring a deep, buttressed, cantilevered canopy, and a secondary entrance is located on Western Street. The rear elevation includes balconies serving tradesmen's entrances on all floors, with ramps at either end to accommodate external staircases. An enclosed lift shaft is centrally positioned in the Western Street wing. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. A brochure issued by Dudley Samuel & Harrison, the managing agents, dates from 1936.
