Description
The Edward VII Memorial Monument, located on King's Road in Brighton, was erected in 1912. The statue, created by Newbury A Trent, is set on a sandstone pedestal that features plaques, railings, and a bronze figure. The monument is positioned on the boundary between Brighton and Hove.
The pedestal is elaborately moulded, square in shape, and stands on three steps. Each side of the pedestal displays a bronze plaque: the north side features a relief portrait of Edward VII, the east side shows the arms of Hove, the south side includes an inscription stating, "IN THE YEAR 1912 THE INHABITANTS OF BRIGHTON AND HOVE PROVIDED A HOME FOR THE QUEEN'S NURSES AND ERECTED THIS MONUMENT IN MEMORY OF EDWARD VII AS A TESTIMONY OF THEIR ENDURING LOYALTY," and the west side displays the arms of Brighton. Each plaque is topped with a segmental cornice.
Atop the pedestal stands a winged female figure holding an olive branch and standing on a globe. The monument is surrounded by a low railing, consisting of short battered piers with bronze railings in between.
